Jiwa Nal Valley

A pristine and lesser-explored region nestled alongside the Jiwa Nal River, adjacent to the more frequented Sainj Valley in the Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP). The river originates from Sartoo, a small glacial pond high in the mountains, fed by snowmelt and glacial runoff. Flowing westward, the Jiwa Nal River winds its way down to the village of Siund, where it eventually merges with the Beas River—one of the key lifelines of Himachal Pradesh.

Trekking in Jiwa Nal Valley offers an unparalleled experience for seasoned hikers and adventure seekers. The trail begins at Siund, approximately 35 kilometers from Aut, and leads deep into the heart of GHNP’s rugged wilderness. One of the most challenging yet rewarding routes in the park is the Jiwa Nal – Parvati Valley trek, recommended only for experienced trekkers due to its steep gradients, remote terrain, and high-altitude conditions.

With its alpine meadows, dense coniferous forests, and breathtaking vistas, Jiwa Nal Valley is a haven for those looking to connect with nature far from the usual tourist routes. Rich in biodiversity and natural beauty, the valley embodies the untouched charm that makes GHNP a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Trekkers crossing river stream: GHNP Jiwa Nal Valley

It is one of the remotest places in the middle Himalayas, and since the park is only accessible by foot, it is one of the best places to be for those who enjoy solitude and raw wilderness. Due to the limited to no presence of locals or other travellers. It is strongly advised that only individuals with a good understanding of geography and strong navigation skills attempt this trek—or do so under the guidance of an experienced local guide, especially due to the absence of man-made trail markers. A permit must be obtained from the office of GHNP before starting this challenging and rewarding trek.
